Royal appointment for Lichfield sailors after landing lifetime achievement awards

Four Lichfield sailors are to receive a top award from the Royal Yachting Association.

Steve and Lynn Baker, of South Staffordshire Sailing Club, and Margaret and Bill Boyson, of Abbots Bromley’s Blithfield Sailing Club, will be presented by the RYA Lifetime Commitment Award from HRH The Princess Royal later this month.

The accolade is in recognition of their commitment to their respective clubs.

Steve, a 69-year-old powerboat instructor, and Lynn, 67 and a member of the junior training team, have been involved in their Gailey-based sailing club for 42 years.

“We were amazed when told about the award as we didn’t think we had done anything exceptional,” Steve said.

“We were both brought up around boats, me on the Norfolk Broads and Lynn on the Thames at Surbiton, so having met as part of University of Birmingham sailing team in 1968 it’s continued to be part of our life.

“We encouraged our sons to get involved too and have always found it to be an excellent sport to involve all the generations of families.”

Margaret, 80, and Bill, 88, joined Blithfield Sailing Club in 1984 and between them have held virtually every official role in the organisation.

“Sailing has given us so much fun, challenge, companionship, purpose, satisfaction and modest achievement,” Margaret said.

“We were amazed when we heard we had won this award. The club had already honoured us with Honorary Life Membership in 2008 so we felt humble and undeserving of something so nationally special.”
