Lichfield City FC undone by Alex Marshall double at Ilkeston Town

Lichfield City FC suffered a weekend to forget as they went down at Ilkeston Town.

A quiet opening saw the game spark to life when keeper Jon Clough collided with an attacker, earning the City man a yellow card and Ilkeston a free kick which they sent over the top.

It was a sign of the danger the home side posed though and they took the lead following some calamitous defending. Josh Sedgley’s heavy touch from a Clough pass allowed Alex Marshall to take advantage and open the scoring.

Sedgley tried to make amends but could only send a strike straight at the Ilkeston keeper.

Lichfield then had a glorious chance to level through Daniel Griffiths, but he spurned a one-on-one by firing at the home stopper.

Ilkeston started brightly in the second period with Montel Gibson sending an effort just wide.

But there was no mistake on 55 minutes when Marshall netted his second with a header past Clough.

Jamie Walker sent an effort just wide as Ilkeston went searching for a third goal, while Clough did well to deny Gibson with 70 minutes on the clock.

Marshall almost turned provider in the final minute, but Gibson fired over after clever set up play.
