Despite the best effort of gritting teams, cars and lorries became stuck with reports of some motorists abandoning their cars after getting stuck.

Some road users were given a helping hand from passers-by to help them tackle inclines on Boley Park in Lichfield. Others weren’t so lucky though with one HGV unable to reach Trent Valley island from the A38.

Staffordshire County Council said its crews armed with snow ploughs were doing their best to keep roads clear.

Cllr Helen Fisher, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet support member for highways and transport, said: “People should take care today to drive to the conditions and allow extra time for their journeys.”
