Conservatives retain Lichfield City Council seat in Stowe ward by-election

The Conservatives have held onto a Lichfield City Council seat after a by-election.

Angela Lax secured 187 votes, while Matthew Field secured 122 votes for Labour in the Stowe ward vote.

The seat had become vacant when David Dundas stepped down in protest at plans to sell off land for the next stage of the Lichfield Southern Bypass.

The City Council refused to send out polling cards, most people didn’t even know there was an election.

Chris, the City Council isn’t responsible for elections, that’s the District Council. If you didn’t receive a polling card or postal ballot you should phone the District Council on 01543308000 and speak to the elections team to make sure you are registered to vote. Everyone who is registered to vote will have received a polling card.

The City Council decide whether poll cards are issued or not, as it is they who bear the cost of a parish election. On this occasion they decided that the District Council should not issue them. Judging by the turnout they may very well re-consider this approach next time.

…so Angela Lax was voted in by 4.7% of the eligible voters in the Stowe ward. Blimey.

I wonder how many of the postal ballots were excluded due to arriving late because of the terrible weather last week?
