A candidate in the Stowe by-election says he intends to listen to voters rather than tell them what he will do if he wins the seat.
The vote for Lichfield City Council and Lichfield District Council was sparked by the resignation of Conservative member David Smedley.
Philip John, from the Something New party, will contest both seats – but admits he has no manifesto and instead wants residents to help define what their elected representative should stand for.
He has been delivering postcards to local homes asking voters to tell him what’s important to them.
“While I’m with a political party, just like other candidates are, my party demands no loyalty from me beyond some basic principles,” he explained.
“Local councillors should be support for local people, hearing their concerns about the area, any problems they see, and desires for how things sound be – and doing what they can within the council to help.
“So there’s no point me telling people what I’ll do if elected, except listen.”
People can also contact him with their views by emailing philip.john@somethingnew.org.uk, calling 07516 816273 or booking a visit online.
