The authority will discuss quotes delivered by local firms to replace all of the windows – 30 in total – on the Old Mining College Centre.

A report to the council’s resources and policy committee said the work was necessary.

“The windows in situ are probably the original 1912 windows,” the report said. “Some of these still have the original float glass in place.

“The existing windows are difficult to open and shut, with certain ones unusable.”

Although the building is not listed, the job of replacing the windows will not be a simple one.

The report explained: “Companies from the local area were asked to quote, and when on site advised that this was quite a task.”

The three quotes received by the council – ranging from £33,100 to £44,599 – will be discussed at the committee meeting on March 1.
