Lichfield City FC hit for six by runaway league leaders Walsall Wood

Lichfield City FC found out why Walsall Wood are runaway leaders in the Midland Football League Division One as they were sunk 6-2.

Things started brightly for Jamie Hawkins’ men as Drew Aiton got them in front on a return to one of his former clubs..

But big-spending Walsall Wood were soon on level terms when ex-Chasetown striker Paul Sullivan fired home.

There were a number of former City players in the home line-up and forwards Tony Clarke and Ben Lund were both asking questions of the visiting backline throughout the first period.

But City were resolute in defence and both sides went into the break level.

Lichfield had their chances to go back in front but they were made to pay for spurning them as Gavin Hurren netted from a corner with an hour on the clock.

It was to be the start of a dismal five minutes for City as both Sullivan and Hurren grabbed a second goal each to put clear daylight between the two sides.

Walsall Wood were clearly in ruthless mood and so it proved as Sullivan completed his hat-trick to make it 5-1.

The scoring wasn’t over though and Lichfield reduced the deficit through sub Tom Green.

But it would be the home side who had the last laugh as former City striker Tony Clarke made it 6-2 in stoppage time.
