Lichfield and Burntwood residents urged to be on their guard against telephone scam

People in Lichfield and Burntwood are being warned to be on their guard against a telephone scam.

Staffordshire Police say they have been contacted by a number of residents across the county who have received calls, texts and voicemails from people claiming to be from HM Revenue and Customs.

Each time, the caller claims they owe money for unpaid taxes and must pay either cash or the value in vouchers within hours or face court action.

A Staffordshire Police spokesperson said: “We would like to remind you that no government agency would ring demanding money over the phone and no legitimate company will ask you to buy vouchers to make or receive payment.

“Please share this advice with friends or relatives, particularly elderly parents, grandparents, friends and neighbours.

“If you receive a suspicious cold call, end it immediately, and please contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.”
