Point at Cleethorpes Town keeps Chasetown FC on track for the play-offs

Chasetown FC remain in the play-off places after picking up a point at Cleethorpes Town.

A defeat for seventh-placed Stamford means the Scholars sit fifth, with a two point cushion over their rivals with two games left to play:

  • 3rd Frickley Athletic: P 39 – GD +53 – Pts 75
  • 4th Bedworth United: P40 – GD +13 – Pts 70
  • 5th Chasetown: P40 – GD +12 – Pts 67
  • 6th Leek Town: P41 – GD +28 – Pts 65
  • 7th Stamford: P40 – GD +25 – Pts 65
  • 8th Lincoln United: P40 – GD +1 – Pts 62

Chasetown started brightly at Cleethorpes, with the home keeper David Birch was lucky to escape with just a yellow card after handling outside his area.

The Scholars had Danny Cocks and George Cater dominating wing play with no end product of clear goalscoring chances.

Cleethorpes’ best chance came when Brody Robertson beat the offside trap and Curtis Pond dashed out to save superbly.

It was no surprise though when Chasetown took the lead in the 35th minute. A looping header from Nick Wellecomme came back off the post and over the line – his 50th goal for the Scholars.

The hosts started the second half more brightly though and Robertson levelled after finding space in the box.

Within minutes The Owls then struck the top of the Scholars crossbar.

Chasetown got a grip of the game again and earned a free kick right on the area which Will Whieldon curled inches wide of the upright.

Jack Langston then forced a fingertip save from Birch with ten minutes left.
