The development will see retail units at City Arcade on Bore Street transformed for the new facility.

Planning permission was sought by Beatbox Urban Boxing Studios for a change of use for the empty shop space, with the new layout also including a coffee shop and smoothie bar.

A statement supporting the application said: “Access to boxing is limited for many as the fear of fighting excludes them – Beatbox encourages those who may be discouraged from boxing to take part in an inclusive boxing themed fitness class where nobody gets hit.

“The change of use application is to bring health and fitness into the city centre serving those who work there and encouraging daily fitness for those who may have limited access to gyms due to issues with travel.

“Women only classes will encourage stay at home mums and new parents back into exercise, offering a platform to socialise and network. The studio will also offer children classes to encourage young people to take part in fitness.”
