Children across Lichfield and Burntwood are being invited to take part in Walk to School Week.
Running until May 25, the event is designed to encourage families to take a healthier option on the daily drop-off and pick-up.
Schools are also being urged to join the 63 ‘walking bus’ schemes that currently operate across Staffordshire. The initiative sees children picked up on foot along a route each day with the help of parent volunteers.
Cllr Helen Fisher, Cabinet support member for highways at Staffordshire County Council, said: “We’ve been working closely with schools over the last few years to encourage more parents and their children to walk to school and it’s great to see so many taking part in this year’s campaign.
“Walking or even scooting or cycling to school has so many benefits for the community and it’s something we are keen to see more of. Not only does it help to keep parents and children fit and healthy, saves money on petrol, but it helps to ease congestion outside our busy schools.”
