The annual fundraiser takes place on June 16 with the registration window shutting at midnight on June 14.

Zoe Westwood, fundraising events manager at St Giles Hospice, said she hoped to see a late flurry of people signing up.

“The Solstice Walk is a really wonderful event – it’s always very emotional for everyone involved and is such a lovely way to raise funds for the hospice, enjoying the fresh air and the beauty of the city by night,” she said.

“It’s a really fun atmosphere as everyone dresses up and dons their fairy wings. It’s the largest sea of fairies you will ever see.”

The women-only event starts at Friary Grange Leisure Centre and is the biggest single fundraising event of the year in the St Giles Hospice calendar.

Entrants must be aged over 13 and can choose between a full nine-mile walk or a single lap of 4.5 miles.

The evening will begin with a Solstice Sunset Party from 7.30pm, before the event kicks off at 10pm.

Some road closures will take place during the event on:

  • Eastern Avenue between the junctions of Irving Close and Grange Lane
  • Grange Lane between the junction of Eastern Avenue and the junction with Wheel Lane and Weston Road
  • Weston Road from the junction of Wheel Lane and Curborough Road
  • Curborough Road between the junctions of Weston Road and Gaia Lane
  • St Chad Road from the junction with Gaia Lane and the junction with Stowe Street/Netherstowe
