Members of the Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust toasted the landmark on their stand at the Lichfield Rotary Cars in the Park event at the weekend.

They were joined by Conservative MP Michael Fabricant who said he hoped the group would continue to go from strength to strength.

“I refused to toast the next 30 years as I hope the canals will be restored long before then,” he said.

“I did work out that, in theory, just one day’s worth of payment to the EU would be enough money to complete the Lichfield Canal. That would be a great Brexit dividend, though I doubt if I’ll be able to persuade the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, to give it to us.”

A volunteer wrote this. Say thanks with a coffee.

Really? using L&H Canal Restoration Trust as a Brexit message, clutching at straws fella, getting that hard to convince people now, even your own hard liners are jumping ship, go throw Davis a life belt or something!

MF got his gob open again without knowing the facts I see. Never misses a trick to promote his personal agenda. Well MF here’s a bit of info you might find interesting. Back in 2006 a European grant enabled construction of a replacement road bridge at Cappers Lane and said EU grant also paid for 11 pre-cast concrete culvert sections that were relocated at Darnford Lane, to be used to replace the road bridge, earlier this year.
But never let the truth stand in the way of a good sound bite eh. Tell a lie long enough and it becomes Politics (thanks for that one Banksy)

And from where does the EU acquire this money to lavish grants on projects?

Rob we all know where but you miss the point surely if that’s all you can come back with. My point is don’t open your mouth to make political points if you can not back it up with facts. The fact is that to date the EU has helped with the restoration project but no help has come from any government that I can see, so why the snide dig at the EU. Oh and that 350M a week is going to the NHS so I’m led to believe.

The government has been helping the EU instead.
Cheaper to cut out the middle-man.

How nice that our beloved MP can spare the time out of his busy schedule to indulge this project which will have no benefit to the average citizen, yet he is totally silent on the matters which matter to the majority such as the appalling state of roads in his constituency (I bet it would cost far less than 1 days contribution to the EU tobring them upto scratch!), the failing NHS & the diabolical so called service on the Cross City. But there again, when did he ever do anything than grab any situation & turn it into a photo opportunity for himself?
