New-look Chasetown FC side suffer pre-season defeat against Abbey Hulton

A much-changed Chasetown FC side suffered a 3-2 pre-season defeat against Abbey Hulton.

The first half saw a plethora of unknown faces to the Scholars faithful. Goalkeeper Josh Allen, Josh Sedgley, James and Mike O’Reilly, Jake Lovatt and Joe Thomas were the only familiar names in the starting line-up.

Lovatt twice went close, one an effort looping over Jacob Holding which he managed to just about hold onto, and then he hit the crossbar on a pitch that reminded us that grass is green and not yellow after the hot spell of the summer.

It was the hosts who opened the scoring though, with 37 minutes on the clock as Shaun Cave netted.

It was late on that the goals really started flying in. With ten minutes to go Will Whieldon converted a spot kick and then almost immediately Chasetown took the lead. John Beaumont’s shot was on target but it was a massive deflection that wrong-footed the sub goalkeeper for Abbey Hulton.

John Outtrum levelled it for the Stoke side with a penalty beyond Curtis Pond in the 86th minute, before the same player won it in the 88th minute with a low shot.
