Final preparations are underway for a community musical in Lichfield.
A 50-strong cast of actors from the local area will take to the stage at the Garrick from July 30 for a production of Once Upon A Mattress, a musical comedy based on Hans Christian Anderson’s fairytale The Princess and the Pea.
It’s the third time the theatre has hosted a community musical and the performers have spent the last four months putting the show together.
Alexander Nicholls, 16, from Upper Longdon, will take on the part of The Minstrel. He said: “I very much enjoyed being part of The Dreaming in 2017 so I wanted to be involved again this year.
“Once Upon a Mattress has all of the elements needed to create a fabulous show. It has comedy, romance, great songs and royalty.”
As well as the cast, there are a number of volunteers, musicians and crew who are working behind the scenes to make the show happen.
A number of actors are taking to the stage for the very first time as well as a few familiar faces who have taken part in previous Lichfield Garrick productions.
Twelve-year-old Jessica Neill, from Brownhills, will play a princess. She said: “I took part in the community show last year and I had such a great time and made lots of lifelong friends.
“I love performing at the Lichfield Garrick and I really like that so many different people are involved. Everyone is really supportive of each other and it’s almost like a big family.”
Once Upon a Mattress runs from July 30 to August 4. For tickets, visit www.lichfieldgarrick.com or call on 01543 412121.
