Ten-man Lichfield City FC lose top spot after defeat at Atherstone Town

Lichfield City FC lost top spot after being beaten by Atherstone Town.

Jamie Hawkins’ men slipped to third in the Midland Football League Division One with their opponents and Racing Club Warwick both leapfrogging them.

Jonathan Gould put Atherstone in front after 18 minutes, before Alex Naughton doubled the Adders’ advantage from the penalty spot ten minutes before half-time.

City’s task got tougher in the first half when Harry Harris was sent off for a challenge.

But Lichfield were still fighting and almost pulled one back just after half-time when Joe Hartshorne was denied by a goal-line clearance.

They did cut the deficit when Hartshorne’s cross was bundled home by Jordan Evans.

Aiton was then denied a leveller, but Atherstone sub Joseph Obi wrapped up the points by adding a third for the hosts.
