Lichfield City FC come from behind three times but miss out on victory in thrilling cup clash

Lichfield City FC narrowly missed out on a place in the next stage of the league cup after a thrilling clash with NKF Burbage.

A lively opening saw both sides carve out chances, but neither side could make the breakthrough in an entertaining first half.

The second half did see the deadlock broken though as NKF Burbage went in front with a free header inside the six yard box.

But City hit back when Drew Aiton’s delivery found Dan Griffiths who made no mistake with a header.

The visitors restored their lead though when a drive from distance found the bottom corner of Lichfield’s net.

Again Jamie Hawkins’ men found a way back into the game when sub Joe Hartshorne’s free kick found the head of Dan McLeod who converted with a neat header.

But City fell behind for a third time when a curling effort from NKF Burbage found the top corner of Adam Jenkins’ net.

The drama wasn’t over though as Hartshorne powered a late effort into the net forcing a penalty shoot out.

Jenkins saved the first spot kick, only to see team-mate Scott Cooper rattled the bar with his effort.

Both sides converted their next three efforts, with NKF Burbage scoring their fifth spot kick to make it 4-3.

Griffiths – who had netted his side’s first goal of the evening – then sent his effort wide to give the visitors the victory in a thrilling clash.
