Chasetown FC got a point in their battle to stay clear of the wrong end of the table after a 1-1 draw at Kidsgrove Athletic.

The Scholars took the lead after two minutes in bizarre circumstances. A mix up between Alex Morris and keeper Dom Kurasik presented Jimmy O’Neill with an open goal and he calmly side footed home his first ever Scholars goal.

Kidsgrove came back strongly and Chasetown twice had to thank Curtis Pond for keeping the sheet clean.

The visitors almost added a second when Tom Hill was clean through and lobbed Kurasik but Oliver Jepson got back to clear the ball off the line.

Hill was narrowly over the crossbar from six yards at the start of the second half before Chasetown’s George Cater rattled the crossbar with a free-kick.

Kidsgrove defender Jepson headed just over the bar and then Will Saxon fired over from a right wing cross.

Hill went close again as both sides created chances.

The hosts eventually levelled in the 70th minute with a curling effort beyond Pond from Anthony Malbon.

Academy youngster Liam Kirton then showed a burst of pace and teed up O’Neill who saw his effort saved by Kurasik.

The home side almost nicked it in the final minute with a goalbound shot superbly palmed behind by Pond.
