Lichfield City FC claim fourth straight league win as they see off Heath Hayes

Lichfield City FC made it four straight league wins as they beat Heath Hayes 2-1.

The result leaves Jamie Hawkins’ men sitting second in the Midland Football League, five points behind frontrunners Heather St Johns.

In an even opening to the encounter, former City stopper Jon Clough making a save to deny James Taylor, while Matthew Hardiman also sent a long range effort wide of the Heath Hayes goal.

Lichfield were having to be alert at the back too as Adam Jenkins did well to prevent the hosts getting their noses in front.

But it was to be City who struck first as Hardiman took advantage of a defensive mix-up to slide the ball into an empty net.

The Lichfield man thought he should have won a penalty before half-time too, but his claims of a push in the back were waved away by the referee.

Heath Hayes had more luck with their own spot kick claims early in the second half and Sam Melia levelled from 12 yards.

But City were back on top when Max Black slotted the ball beyond Clough.

Both sides continued to look capable of scoring again, with Black sending a couple of efforts wide, while Heath Hayes saw two headers sneak past the upright.

It looked as though the home side had rescued a dramatic point late on when the ball found the net, only for the linesman’s flag to deny them a share of the spoils and hand Lichfield a result that keeps them in touch at the top of the table.
