The collection of original 1960s Stan Lee Fantastic Four editions were built up by Birmingham man Brian Bowler – who even wrote to Marvel in the USA to get rare comics when the flight carrying several editions crashed into the sea on its way to the UK.

The collection almost disappeared when thieves twice missed them before they were safely stored away in a bank vault.

They went under the hammer at Richard Winterton Auctioneers this week, fetching a total of £15,200.

Mr Bowler died aged 66 in March 2017. His widow Joyce decided to part with the collection to help support her retirement.

The couple’s nephew, James Linden, said: “We are pleasantly surprised and very happy with the prices obtained for the collection.”
