A Lichfield schoolgirl is getting ready to take on the world at a dance competition in America.
Ten-year-old Heidi Hawkes will fly out to Greensboro in the USA this week to compete in the World Irish Dancing Championships.
The St Joseph’s RC Primary School pupil will be part of a seven-strong team from the Kidd School of Irish Dance heading across the Atlantic to take on dancers from around the globe.
Heidi, who has been crowned Midlands Regional Champion for the last two years, will compete in the under 11 age group.
“I’m really excited to be going to America,” she said. “It’s always been a dream of mine to compete at the world championships.
“This is the first year I’ve been old enough to dance in the solo competitions, although I did get the chance to dance in the ceili team competition last year which was great fun.”
Heidi, who began dancing at the age of four, has previously competed at competitions including the All Ireland Championships but this will be her first chance to dance outside the UK and Ireland.
“I can’t wait to take to the stage in Greensboro and I’m really looking forward to seeing how well I can do,” she said.
“So many people have supported me by fundraising to help me to make it to America, so I hope I can do them proud.”
