An independent candidate says important decisions about Lichfield should not be made behind closed doors.

Christopher Wilkinson will stand in the Stowe ward in the Lichfield District Council vote on 2nd May.

One of the areas he says he would be keen to tackle if elected is openness.

He said: “Important and often expensive decisions on local affairs such as Friarsgate should not be made behind closed doors as this prevents councillors from being held to account.

“Minutes of meetings held by the council are a vital resource for local news coverage, helping residents to understand what their council is doing for them.

“These should be made readily available.”

Although the council does publish minutes of meetings, some sections are redacted where members of the public and press are excluded.

A number of discussions around the Friarsgate redevelopment were held behind closed doors as the long-awaited project ground to a halt before eventually collapsing.

Mr Wilkinson added: “We need to create a council that is run openly and transparently, endorsing freedom of speech and enabling citizens to access information.”
