Final day defeat can’t stop Lichfield City FC claiming fourth place

Lichfield City FC secured fourth place in the table despite slipping to a final day defeat.

Jamie Hawkins’ men lost 2-1 against Chelmsley Town, but still managed to finish fourth in the Midland Football League Division One after fifth placed Leicester Road could only take a point from their game with Studley.

City had an early let off when the visitors fired against the crossbar.

But Lichfield’s luck changed when Jordan Evans created a chance for Alex Keating who tapped home inside the box.

The scores were level though when a smart finish found the net.

And the game was almost turned around when Chelmsley netted, only for the linesman’s flag to come to City’s rescue.

The relief was short-lived though as a penalty saw the visitors get their noses in front before the break.

Keating forced a good save out of the Chelmsley keeper early in the second half before Lichfield also had an effort chalked off for offside.

Evans cannoned a strike against the keeper’s legs as well as sending an effort wide of the target as City chased the game.

Keating had a good chance to salvage a point, but it wasn’t to be as his shot flew over the bar.
