A councillor has claimed the Conservatives gave Labour an advantage in the local elections Burntwood after losing focus on the town.

Cllr Steve Norman was elected for the Chase Terrace ward in last week’s vote alongside Labour colleague Cllr Sharon Banevicius.

It marks a return to the local political arena for Cllr Norman, who missed out on a seat at the previous vote.

But he believes the Conservatives made his job easier after focusing too much on issues in Lichfield.

“I’m very pleased,” he told Lichfield Live after the count. “I’m pleased for the party and pleased for the people I represent.

“We did have an advantage in Burntwood though because of what Lichfield hasn’t done for Burntwood.

“People know that Friarsgate has been a black hole as far as resources are concerned for Lichfield District Council and so we had the advantage of not being responsible for that.”

Labour saw their number of councillors jump to ten as the Conservatives saw their majority dip at Lichfield District Council.

And Cllr Norman believes the work of some of his party’s elected representatives has been key in seeing them win seats.

“In the case of colleagues like Colin Ball and others, it’s down to them being so good on the council.”
