Their son Tyler was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital where he was pronounced dead, with his cause of death recorded as ‘unascertained’.

But jurors heard that he had suffered injuries prior to his death.

Detective Chief Inspector Victoria Downing, of Staffordshire Police, said the case was “tragic and distressing”.

She added: “Our first thoughts are with Tyler, who was barely two-months-old when he lost his life, and his extended family.

“This has been a difficult and distressing case to bring before the courts and we are grateful to those who have provided evidence to allow the jury to reach this decision.”

Morgan and Cole – who were found not guilty of murder and manslaughter – will be sentenced at Stafford Crown Court on 21st June.

Difficult to understand why this case has taken five years to come to court. It must be quite rare for a baby to be abused by such a young couple. Little evidence is published here but I hope it was compelling and that there is not doubt about the safety of the convictions. Of course justice for baby Tyler is essential but there always seems to be a subjective element in such events. It would be interesting to hear their defence.
