Police say they are working with supermarket bosses after a group of travellers set up camp in a Lichfield car park.
Caravans and vehicles have taken up position in the car park of Waitrose on the Darwin estate.
Residents have taken to social media asking for action to be taken, but local police said that as the land was private, they could not take direct action at this stage.
Chief Inspector Mark Smith said: “We are aware and are supporting Waitrose who have ownership of the land and must apply for the appropriate legal power to evict.
“We will continue to monitor while the legal process is being progressed.”
