Voters in Lichfield and Burntwood will have trust and Brexit high on their General Election agenda, according to the Liberal Democrats.
Residents will head to the polls tomorrow (12th December) to elect the area’s next MP.
Among the runners and riders is Paul Ray, who will represent the Lib Dems.
Speaking on the eve of the vote, he told Lichfield Live only his party could be trusted to bring the country back from the brink of Brexit:
“This election is about two main issues – Brexit and who can you trust.
“The Liberal Democrats position on Brexit is crystal clear. We believe Remain is best for Britain.
“The Conservatives want to lead us over the cliff of an economic disaster – as the second largest exporting region in the UK, Brexit will hit us very hard here.
Labour is just unable to make up its mind on Brexit. You cannot be sure where Labour stand on Brexit. You can with the Lib Dems.”Liberal Democrat candidate Paul Ray
Conservative rival Michael Fabricant has long campaigned to ensure the UK leaves the European Union.
But his Lib Dem counterpart says the idea that Brexit will be achieved if the Tories gain a majority is a myth:
“Michael Fabricant says a vote for him is to Get Brexit Done but that just cannot be true.
“We still need to negotiate a trade deal with the EU and that will go on for years and years, or otherwise Boris will blunder into a disastrous no deal.
“We say that our future is best if we remain in the EU but the final decision should be with you in a People’s Vote as above all it will affect our children and grandchildren – and now we can make a decision based on facts rather than slogans.”Liberal Democrat candidate Paul Ray
“Wildly extravagant spending promises”
Cllr Ray, who currently sits on both Lichfield City Council and Lichfield District Council, said voters would need to consider whether they can believe promises being made by all parties.
“The Liberal Democrats have ambitious plans for our NHS and public services.
“We see the chronic state of these here in our own community – Lichfield no longer has a police station, school funding has been cut to the bone, GP waiting times are getting longer and longer.
“Labour are making wildly extravagant spending promises which you just cannot believe. And you just cannot believe the Conservative promises considering that they will only spend an extra 0.35% each year on your public services.
“The Lib Dems have made responsible funding commitments you can trust.”
“We recognise that tax increases are not always popular but we will put 1p in the pound on income tax and that will be ringfenced for our NHS and care services.”Liberal Democrat candidate Paul Ray
Candidates contesting the Lichfield seat at the 2019 General Election are:
- Michael Fabricant (Conservatives)
- John Madden (Independent)
- Andrea Muckley (Green Party)
- Paul Ray (Lib Dems)
- Dave Robertson (Labour)
