A new weekly mail service is coming to Hammerwich to give local residents access to postal facilities.

Residents will be able to use the mobile Post Office van when it visits the Community Hall every Friday between 11.45am and 12.15pm.

The service will help fill the gap left by the closure of Hammerwich’s Post Office a number of years ago.

Cllr Vance Wasdell, chairman of Hammerwich Parish Council, said it would be a boost for local residents – who have also seen their local postbox taken by thieves recently.

“A great number of alternatives have been explored, but as the village does not have the population to generate enough turnover for a full time Post Office, the mobile service comes as something of a lifeline, particularly for our pensioners.

“Even though the service is minimal, residents are pleased they will be saved a journey into town with all that that entails.

“Unfortunately, our post box was stolen recently, but I can assure parishioners the process to replace it is in hand.”

The new service will not run on 3rd June due to the Jubilee celebrations.
