Gardeners in Lichfield and Burntwood can now recycle their old compost bags for them to be used to create outdoor furniture for a charity.
Shenstone garden centre Dobbies has launched a new initiative which will see people able to drop off the polythene sacks rather than sending them to landfill.
Marcus Eyles, horticultural director at Dobbies, said:
“With this scheme, anyone can bring in any compost packaging to our Shenstone store, no matter what brand or where it was purchased, and return it to one of the recycling bins.
“We wanted to ensure gardeners have the opportunity to dispose of their compost packaging in a sustainable way.”
Dobbies is working with Evergreen Garden Care to create garden furniture from the recycled material.
The items will then be donated to Greenfingers, a charity that creates green spaces for terminally ill children.
Jane Hartley, sustainability marketing manager at Evergreen Garden Care, said:
“We are delighted to be working in collaboration with Dobbies, rolling out the compost bag scheme across all stores, including Shenstone.
“We had a trial to develop a collection programme that will work. We hope residents make the most of this scheme.”Jane Harltey, Evergreen Garden Care
