Work has begun to install new payment machines at a Lichfield car park.
The current pay and display system at The Friary Car Park is being replaced by an ANPR pay on exit one.
It will mean vehicles have their number plates registered as they enter and then use new terminals to input their number plate to pay their parking fee when they are ready to exit.
Lichfield District Council leader, Cllr Doug Pullen, said:
“We are delighted work has begun on the new payment machines at The Friary Car Park.
“The new pay on exit system will greatly improve the experience for customers as it removes any worry about having to return by a certain time associated with pay and display. The ANPR technology makes this possible.
“It is not being introduced to enforce but to record the time a vehicle spends in the car park and establish the correct tariff charge.
“Work to install the new machines is scheduled to be completed in early December.”
Cllr Doug Pullen, Lichfield District Council
Drivers will be able to pay by cash, credit and debit card or use smart devices such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Residents and permit holders of the Franciscan View retirement complex will be on an approved list, so will be able to leave without payment.

More Council money wasted what’s the point 🤷♂️ The exit & entrance is tight as it is Car damage waiting to happen! Utter BS it makes the “Experience” better. 👍😂
with so much pressure on spending the council see fit to waste money on new machines. There’s nothing wrong with the existing ones.
sums up everything that’s wrong with this pathetic council
Why don’t the Council put pay on exit in all the car parks and give everyone 30 minutes free to allows a quick foray into town? So much better than guessing how long you will be. Visitors would stay longer.
More wasted money
Is this another no go area for the disabled
How is this going to be any different from when the the shopping centre took over their car parks from the council and had this system, it was a disaster.
Cllr Doug Pullen said we wouldn’t have a system like that, but we have ended up with one, so you cannot now believe a word they say.
Tesco tried the system for their car park, didn’t last long, now not in use
Bet you the price mysteriously goes up
Ken H – just for clarity, unlike private car park operators, the council won’t be using it to issue fines (in fact, the council is legally prevented from doing so); it’s merely there to calculate how long you’ve parked for.
I’d like all carparks to have this eventually, as this system tends to mean people spending longer in the city centre (and hopefully spending more money in our shops and restaurants!), compared to traditional pay and display systems, where you have to pre-pay for a specified time period.
I think this is a good idea and will make parking in Lichfield much easier. I hope they roll it out to all car parks asap.
Well l don’t know why anyone wonts to come to Lichfield. It’s like Big bother is watching you everywhere. And now they are going to whatch your car…Time to get this money pit council OUT……
