After the high of a win over Shrewsbury a week earlier, Burntwood turned in a flat performance away to Camp Hill as they lost 18-12.

They started the game well, but two misfiring line outs saw them surrender promising positions in the opening ten minutes.

The hosts took the lead on 12 minutes with a well-struck penalty goal from near halfway.

Three minutes later, they went further ahead. An attempted chip and chase by Brett Taylor was run back by Camp Hill. The initial attack was halted, but the ball was recycled out for an easy try in the right corner.

Taylor had the chance to open Burntwood’s account after 23 minutes, but his penalty goal attempt rebounded off the left upright. However, from the subsequent 22 drop out, Josh Massey collected to take play close to the home line. Camp Hill infringed and a tapped penalty to Hal Gozukucuk saw him cross the line under the posts for a try converted by Taylor.

Both sides had promising moments up to the break but the scores remained unaltered at 8-7 to the hosts after a half which never really got going.

The home side made a strong start to the second period. A series of close range scrummages finally led to the forwards forcing their way over for a converted try.

Burntwood almost replied immediately when Massey caught the restart kick to earn a penalty, but for once Taylor miscued his shot at goal from the ten metre line.

It was quickly forgotten when Gozukucuk caught the drop out restart. Possession was moved right for Kian Carter to inject pace before feeding Sion Edwards to score the best try of the game.

With ten minutes left, the hosts benefited from another error by the visitors, this time missing touch with a penalty award. When the ball was run back at them, they infringed and a good strike from the home kicker made it 18-12.

Camp Hill were keen to record only their second win of the season in front of their Vice Presidents’ Day crowd and they achieved it via a combination of keen defence and errors made by Burntwood’s stuttering attack.

The result meant they did return with a losing bonus point to remain fifth in the table.

Burntwood 2nds took the honours in their local derby at home to Whittington winning by 22-15.

After seven league games, they have an identical record to the 1sts with four wins and three defeats.

The Colts lost out 57-14 at home to Old Halesonians on Sunday in their North Midlands Colts League fixture.

With no league games scheduled this weekend, the third team have a friendly run out away to Veseyans.

League games restart on 4th November with the 1sts hosting table toppers Old Saltleians, who have won seven from seven, while the 2nds travel to face Atherstone. Both kick offs are at 2.15pm.
