The launch of the boxing initiative in Lichfield

An event in Lichfield will raise awareness of the dangers of knife crime with young people.

Drop The Knife, Pick Up The Gloves is being spearheaded by local boxing coach Craig Tipton.

He said he was keen to channel the energy of young people into something positive.

“Due to a recent rise in gang violence, knife crime and antisocial behaviour, we are making a drive to educate and give young people another outlet.

“This is aimed at anyone who has been bullied, exposed to gangs or has been involved in crime.

“There is another way. Learn to box in a safe environment. Get fitter and stronger, meet new people and change your way of life.”

Craig, who runs the Craig Tipton Boxing Academy in Brownhills, will be joined at the Lichfield Social Club event by Paula Reynolds and other volunteers.

Paula’s son was the victim of an unprovoked knife attack which medics said narrowly avoided killing him.

Parents who are concerned that their children are becoming involved in antisocial behaviour is also welcome to attend the event, which takes place from 11am to 2pm on 11th November, to discuss their concerns.

Craig said:

“We aim to lift the fallen, restore the broken and encourage the discouraged.”

If a boxing club were to open up in Lichfield I reckon it would prove very fruitful for the youth here. Perhaps the council should look into this endeavour instead of more coffee shops and failed promises for a cinema.
