The Nick Dewhurst Band playing at The Hub at St Mary's

With pianist Tim Amman and Paul Robinson on fretless bass, the trumpet player Nick Dewhurst bought his latest show in the Sunday Night Jazz series to The Hub at St Mary’s.

With an attentive audience the trio explored the world of the jazz piano, with pieces by such names as Chick Corea, Dave Brubeck, Horace Silver and Oscar Peterson featuring in a set that ranged from languid tone poems to muscular blues and be-bop pieces.

Pop crossover hits such as Paul Desmond’s Take Five – with the saxophone part carried by trumpet – and some inventive support from piano and bass were well received, as was the more contemplative Blue in Green.

A couple of original pieces also featured, written by Tim Ammann with the melodic soundscape of Solstice and the more upbeat K2 Blues showing the acoustics of The Hub and the talents of the three musicians to their best advantage.
