A piece of firefighting equipment previously used by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is being donated to Ukraine.

It comes after a request from the National Fire Chiefs’ Council for support to provided to the war-torn country.

The aerial ladder platform is being replaced by a new model meaning the previous vehicle can be handed over and become the first from Staffordshire to be redeployed for use by emergency services in Ukraine.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer Glynn Luznyj said:

“We’re proud to be able to provide an aerial ladder platform to Ukraine – it’s a really positive move.”

The vehicle is expected to be sent as part of a government-backed aid convoy next month.

Staffordshire Commissioner Ben Adams said:

“Russian attacks in Ukraine are continuing to have a detrimental impact on Ukrainian people, buildings and services.

“Notably, over 1,500 fire vehicles and 388 firehouses have now been destroyed.

“I’m delighted that one of the old aerial ladder platforms will now be put to better use and sent to Ukraine to continue its fire and rescue purpose and save lives.”
