THE Liberal Democrats have set out a list of priorities they believe should be at the forefront as Lichfield District Council draws up a new Local Plan.
The document, once completed, will help define the future of the area over the coming decades.
The Lib Dems say attracting business, managing housing demand through a new settlement and enhanced infrastructure must be at the heart of the council’s future plans.
Cllr Paul Ray, the group’s leader at Lichfield District Council, said:
“The production of a new Local Plan setting the course for the next 20 years of development in the district gives us the opportunity to introduce new standards which will benefit all residents.”
The party believes meeting new increased housing targets likely to be introduced as part of national changes cannot be achieved by expanding current residential areas in Lichfield and Burntwood.
Instead, the Lib Dem group has backed plans for a new settlement, potentially on land near to the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas with the reopening of the railway line between Lichfield and Burton as part of the proposals.
Cllr Hugh Ashton, Lib Dem representative for Stowe ward, said efforts must also take place to drive employment opportunities.
He has suggested the Local Plan could create an environment where the area becomes appealing for meetings, conferences and exhibitions.
Cllr Ashton said:
“Clearly for larger events Birmingham NEC is the answer for such conferences or meetings, but the central location of Lichfield would make it an ideal spot for national organisations to host smaller gatherings.”
