A CAPACITY audience welcomed a one-man production of Three Men in a Boat when GSP Theatre Productions performed at the Hub at St Mary’s.
Jerome K Jerome’s classic tale of the misadventures of three men’s adventures on the River Thames was performed by Giles Shenton in a fashion that was both exhilarant and at other times more refined.
In adapting the story, there had to be some necessary changes to the script, but the narrative was left largely intact. Many of the stories and episodes set on the river survived, while some of the more wistful elements were removed, but nothing interfered in the telling of the story.
The piano and scene setting music of Andrew Brewis added to the aural texture of the performance, while the set was detailed was in-keeping with the books.
The stories of Banjo playing, getting lost on the Thames and the anecdote about the problems with trains all added to an evening of fun storytelling and well-performed theatre.
