MEMBERS of Lichfield City Council have taken part in specialist training designed to help support victims of hate crime.

The session was delivered by Uniting Staffordshire Against Hate.

The free service provides emotional and practical support to victims, as well as providing training on topics such as legal definitions, barriers to reporting and the role of local authorities.

Cllr Hugh Ashton, Liberal Democrat member for Chadsmead ward, said:

“I saw the organisation’s exhibition at a recent volunteer fair held in the cathedral.

“Given recent visits to the city by certain groups, I felt it was important that our city councillors knew more about these matters, and I therefore discussed this with the leader of the council, Cllr Rosie Harvey-Coggins, who responded promptly by booking this session.”

Cllr Harvey-Coggins said:

“By taking part in this training, members of Lichfield City Council can affirm their commitment to promoting inclusion, supporting victims and ensuring that Lichfield remains a safe and welcoming place for all.

“Being better informed in this way will help us achieve these goals.”
