George – The Concert
George – The Concert

WITH a storied career in The Beatles, a solo spell and various side projects including The Travelling Wilburys, there is a lot of music to fit into an evening of George Harrison’s music.

With a five piece band, led by Nick Bold as George on vocals, guitar and mandolin, and a backing singer, drummer, bass and keyboard player, the show gave the musician’s better-known songs a good showing, while finding time for some lesser-known gems too.

From the sing-along Here Comes the Sun which opened the second half and Something, there were also the other Beatles songs he wrote, such as the early punk-rock styling of Taxman and If I Needed Someone.

As well as his own songs, the pieces he wrote with other people featured too, with Photograph – a co-write with Ringo Starr – being particularly well played.

Two hits from the Travelling Wilburys also went down well, with the mandolin-driven End of the Road and the well crafted Handle With Care.

Stories from his time with The Beatles featured, with poignant performances of All Those Years Ago and When We Was Fab.

His more mystical songs were also exploited in Give Me Love and one of his later big hits, Got My Mind Set On You, was saved until the encore, which also featured a spirited take of Chuck Berry’s Roll Over Beethoven which showed the debt that The Beatles owed to their earliest rock and roll pioneers.
