A SUMMER reading challenge has got underway for local youngsters.

Running until 15th September, the initiative invites youngsters aged 11 and under to read at least six books during the school holidays.

This year’s event has a “story garden” theme to encourage children to enjoy tales exploring the natural world.

Youngsters can sign up for the challenge at local libraries, with each visit rewarding them with a sticker for their collector’s card. Those that complete the challenge will receive a medal, certificate and seed shape for planting.

Cllr Hayley Coles, cabinet member for communities and culture at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“It’s wonderful to see this year’s summer reading challenge get underway.

“I’m incredibly proud of the efforts of our libraries, in partnership with The Reading Agency, to encourage children to read and explore stories that keep their literacy skills sharp while nourishing their imagination.

“Last year’s challenge was a huge success with thousands of families joining in and we hope to make this year’s even better.”
