A NUMBER of schools across Lichfield and Burntwood have closed their doors for the day due to snow.

The winter weather overnight saw many make an early decision to shut today (9th January).

A statement from Nether Stowe School in Lichfield said:

“Due to severe weather conditions and unsafe surrounding roadways, our school will be closed to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and families.”

Chase Terrace Academy told students and parents:

“Due to unsafe site conditions and insufficient staffing, the school will be closed.

“With areas across Staffordshire affected differently by the snowfall, we do not want anyone to risk travelling.

“Home learning will be set.”

A full list of closures can be found on Staffordshire County Council’s website.

I can’t ever remember school being shut due to snow and if heating went down you sat there with a duffle coat on

@mike and @Grumpy. Old Man – and famously nobody died or got injured before proper consideration to health and safety in workplaces and education? In the same way children aren’t disciplined with corporal punishment and your ability to go to work isn’t stopped by your Austin 1100 not starting – times have moved on!

Mike – yet children these days are able to properly use grammar. Weird isn’t it?

I remember winter of 63. We all went to school with hats/coats /gloves . Parents shovelled the snow(and it was deep) at the entrance. School milk frozen and we all thawed it out with our hands until drinkable . Sat in class with coats on , don’t remember a day when school closed .

My school in Norway never closed for snow. And no sitting in a classroom with a coat on for those of us on the outdoor pursuits course! We were off up mountains in -25 degrees, skiing through blizzards and sleeping in snowholes or under the stars.

If UK winters were as cold as Norway’s, we’d invest in snow tyres and dress better for the weather. Maybe we’d even become a nation of skiers! As it is, it makes sense to close the schools for a day or two and keep as many people as possible off the icy roads and out of our overstretched A&Es.

Enjoy the snow!

Saw plenty of “students and families” happily walking and running around with sleds, making snowmen and enjoying snowball fights on Friday. Seemed to be no worries about health and safety from what I saw. My deputy head at Chasetown in the 70’s would have laughed in your face if you’d suggested the school should be closed in adverse weather.

Unfortunately for you there, Mark, you’ve split your infinitive.
