ALREWAS were left disappointed after a 49-run loss at Alvaston and Boulton.

The Herons won the toss and opted to send the home side in to bat first.

But the hosts proved a tough nut to crack as Hamid Qadir hit 89 to help set a target of 278-7.

Sam van Daesdonk was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-33.

Alrewas' response saw them get off to a solid start, reaching 54 before Will Smedley (14) became the first wicket to fall.

James Burton made 56, but few were able to forge a partnership with him as his dismissal saw the Herons left on 117-5.

The middle order offered some hope as Freddie Clarke (27), William Hodgkinson (19) and Thomas Sherratt (24) all pushed the scoreboard along.

But despite an unbeaten 31 from van Daesdonk, the Alrewas innings came to a close on 229-9.
