Amendments to the plans to withdraw Lichfield District Council’s draft Local Plan have been welcomed by Labour councillors.

The opposition group supported the decision to ditch the document, but secured an agreement from the controlling Conservatives to put in place measures to manage the risks of removing it.

They include the development of a timetable for the process and steps to handle issues such as community infrastructure levy, supplementary planning documents and environmental policies and obligations.

Cllr Sue Woodward, leader of the Labour group, said:

> “While we are pleased that the Conservative group accepted our amendments to the original recommendations, we are not at all happy about the way this whole business has been handled.
>
> “That was clear from the many speeches made by Labour councillors at the council meeting. We were worried about the risks of not having a sound Local Plan in place, such as creating a developers free for all, where they can build whatever they want wherever they want.
>
> “We were also confused as to why some of the current cabinet who were very supportive of the Emerging Local Plan 2040 were now agreeing to withdraw it.
>
> “I also hope that the Conservative group will take due note of the fact that we talked to them about this before the ccouncil meeting and make sure that in future they consult properly with us on any issues that they want to bring forward, so that we can all work together in a collegiate way for the benefit of all the residents of Lichfield District.”

The draft Local Plan is being withdrawn after the new cabinet member responsible said the Conservatives were keen to pursue a new approach to housing which would see a new settlement rather than urban sprawl in existing areas.

Cllr Colin Ball, who tabled the amendments, said:

> “I was glad that Cllr Alex Farrell felt able to accept the amendments that I suggested to him before the council meeting.
>
> “I feel that these amendments will make it clear to all residents in Lichfield District that we want to see urgent action to develop a new Local Plan that will shape a better environment for all who live here, including more energy efficient and greener homes, more and better infrastructure, including public transport, health services and schools before new homes are built – and a drive for genuinely affordable housing across the district, especially social rented homes.”
