MORE than 40% of apartments being built in Lichfield’s former library have sold before being publicly launched.

The Old Library development is being carried out by Gr8space at The Friary. It will see the Grade II listed ex-grammar school become 21 one and two-bedroom apartments.

The site closed its doors in 2018 when the library was moved to St Mary’s, despite a public campaign for it to remain in place.

Aimee Shorthouse, from Savills Midlands – which is marketing the development – said the scheme had already proved popular with buyers.

> “Interest in The Old Library has been exceptional from the moment we quietly introduced the scheme was coming soon at the end of last year.
>
> “To have 40% sold before full launch demonstrates the strength of demand for high‑quality homes in central Lichfield, particularly those with architectural character and a story behind them.
>
> “Buyers are responding to the beautiful renovation work, the premium specification and, of course, the unbeatable location just a short walk from everything the city offers.
>
> “We expect momentum to continue now that the scheme is formally on the market.”

Developer Gr8space said the scheme had sought to retain the building’s original charcter, including high ceilings, exposed beams and brick archways.

Managing director Nick Liddell said:

> “The Old Library is a building that means a great deal to Lichfield residents, and we’ve taken great care to preserve that sense of legacy while delivering beautifully finished homes for modern living.
>
> “Seeing such strong off‑market demand reinforces our belief in the importance of thoughtful, design‑led regeneration.
>
> “We’re proud to officially launch the development and look forward to welcoming the next wave of buyers as the scheme comes to life.”
