THE humble British apple will be celebrated at an event in Whittington next week.

The Apple Day event will take place from 10am to 1pm on 26th September at Crossroads house on Huddlesford Lane.

The village apple press will return, giving people the chance to bring their own surplus apples to turn them into juice they can take away in containers.

There will also be freshly-pressed juice from local orchards available to buy.

A spokesperson said:

> "Learn about the history of the apple and sample different varieties including rare Staffordshire ones like Betsy Baker and Roland Smith, and our unique Whittington varieties – the famous John Downie crab apple which was discovered in the village around 1890 and the Whittington Hero apple which was found growing wild on Whittington ranges 10 years ago.
>
> "You can also wander through the 70-year-old orchard at this historic ex-farmhouse with 40 varieties of apple and a range of plum, damson, pear and other fruit trees."

Activities for kids will be on hand, including apple picture printing, apple pig making, a swing and climbing frame, mini football pitch and play area.
