The mystery creation depicting a man and his dog near a fire with a plate hanging on a wall saying ‘home street home’ appeared a derelict house near Lichfield.

The Birmingham-based artist known as Itchers has now come forward to reveal he painted it – and he admitted he wanted to use the work to highlight the plight of people across the UK after seeing his mother volunteer with a homeless charity each week.

“I did this piece to speak about the harsh reality of how life is for some people really,” he told *Lichfield Live*.

“All the abandoned houses, factories and buildings we have and yet there are still people living on our streets.

“That’s where the abandoned house came in as a canvas – it just worked well for the image and what I was speaking about.

“People shouldn’t be on the streets in this day and age.”

The artwork’s creation comes as [figures revealed that the backlog on Lichfield and Burntwood’s own housing register could take up to 30 years to clear](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2019/03/07/call-for-more-affordable-homes-after-report-reveals-it-would-take-almost-30-years-at-current-rate-to-clear-housing-waiting-list-in-lichfield-and-burntwood/) if the current rate of affordable home building does not increase.
