Barton United recorded their sixth straight win in the league and the third clean sheet in a row in a hard fought 2-0 win against a talented Boldmere Sports and Social side at Holland Sports Club.

Barton’s recent run of fine form has been epitomised by a fast start high pressing tempo and this was again in evidence on Saturday with the opposition being forced into conceding possession in dangerous areas on a regular basis as Pete Martin and George Stack didn’t give a minute’s peace to the Boldmere back four.

The early pressure resulted in the first goal of the game following a free kick close to the half way line. Jon Douglas’ slightly scuffed effort took an awkward bounce in front of the Boldmere centre half causing him to miss judge the flight of the ball completely with the onrushing Ali Holding reacted quickly to the loose ball on the edge of the box and cooly slotted the ball first time under the advancing goalkeeper.

As the half progressed the visitors grew into the game with a combination of slick passing and tough challenges being traded by both teams all over the pitch. Dale Barton and his opposition full back perhaps both lucky to avoid bookings in a particularly ferocious battle on the Barton left flank. Jake Fogarty making his home debut picked up where he left off the previous week with safe hands and confidently marshalling his back four to ensure that the Boldmere attackers had little joy despite growing spells of possession.

Barton were slightly disappointed to not double their advantage before the break with both Pete Martin and Nathan Hunt wasting good opportunities following some delicious through balls being provided by Barton’s centre midfielders Ali Holding and Sean Wallis.

As the second half began it was obvious Barton were trying to recreate their early tempo in the game with a high pressing tactic evident across the pitch. The game remained particularly full blooded with tough tackles flying in from both sides resulting in the referee brandishing a number of yellow cards for both sides.

The growing influence of Wallis and Holding in the centre of the midfield was beginning to become more and more evident and it was Wallis who chased down a lost cause who was able to create the chance for the vital second goal. Dispossessing the Boldmere Centre half and bursting into the box Wallis slotted the ball past the goalkeeper with centre forward Pete Martin managing to get a vital touch on the ball ensuring the covering full back had no chance of clearing the ball.

Barton’s bench was fully utilised in the closing half an hour to ensure a combination of injuries and players on yellow cards could be protected. Valuable minutes for Jon Thompson, Gav Allers and Danny Barton helped to keep the line up fresh as Barton professionally went about closing the game out with Fogarty and Stack again instrumental in ensuring a strong defensive shape was maintained as the visitors pushed forward in search of a way back into the game.

The win lifts Barton into second place in the league as attention turns to cup action again next week away at Team Dudley in the Birmingham Vase.
