Barton United are still looking for their first league points of 2015 after a 3-1 loss at Inkberrow.

Black Swans manager Greg Smith altered the team shape for the fixture switching from the usual 4-5-1 to 3-5-2 to accommodate the players available and this unfamiliar shape perhaps contributed to a shaky start as they relied on some strong goalkeeping from debutant Jacob Wright to keep them in the game.

They eventually began to find their feet in the game, with Swinfield and Hunt pushing on from centre midfield to cause problems for the Inkberrow defence creating chances. Dade and Martin were both denied by good saves from the home keeper.

But the deadlock was broken midway through the first half after the Inkberrow left winger jinked his way round three defenders in a tight space before cutting the ball across the box for the advancing attacker to sweep home.

Barton didn’t let the setback disrupt their flow too much as they forced more saves out of the hosts’ keeper.

Disaster struck before half time though when a counter attack ended with an Inkberrow midfielder sweeping home at the second attempt.

An anticipated strong start from Barton in the second half took some time to build up momentum, but the away team were confident they could still find a way back into the game. They were applying pressure to a defence that at times looked shaky dealing with balls in behind them.

But the visitors had defensive frailties of their own and soon found themselves 3-0 down, before the arrival of Smith and Featherstone from the bench seemed to have a positive impact on the team.

Barton found a glimmer of hope when Craig Swinfield smashed home from close range, but Inkberrow closed out the game to seal the three points.

A disappointing performance from the Black Swans sees them slip to ninth in Division Three of the Midland Football League. Currently on a run of five straight away games, improvements will be required next week as they travel to Boldmere Sports & Social, who currently sit one place above them in the table.
