# BNP rule out Lichfield candidate in the general election

The British National Party has said it will not be putting forward a candidate in the Lichfield constituency at the general election.

Following the creation of a [branch of the organisation being set up](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2009/07/13/british-national-party-announce-new-branch-in-lichfield/) in the city last year and a [controversial photocall](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2009/04/22/revealed-the-picture-which-sparked-lichfield-cathedrals-row-with-the-bnp/) outside Lichfield Cathedral, it had been anticipated that a candidate would stand.

However a spokesperson for the party told The Lichfield Blog:

> “We can confirm that there’s no BNP candidate contesting Lichfield.”

No reasons were given for the decision not to put forward a candidate after they fought the [local county elections in the city](//lichfieldlive.co.uk/2009/06/05/conservative-election-wins-in-lichfield-burntwood/). The party have already [announced](http://bnpelectionresults.blogspot.com/2009/12/list-of-ppc-standing-for-bnp-so-far.html?ref=lichfieldlive.co.uk) that they will be contesting a number of seats across the country in the forthcoming general election.

Michael Fabricant will aim to hold onto the Lichfield constituency for the Conservatives in the face of challenges from Ian Jackson (Liberal Democrats) and Steve Hyden (Labour) when Britain goes to the polls on May 6.
