An away draw and a home defeat matches last season’s record against the mid-table Birmingham outfit. The result could have gone either way in a match played in atrocious conditions. At one point, just 12 minutes in, the referee took the players off for a ten minute break while a hailstorm, thunder and lightning battered The Sportsway. When play restarted it was on a morass of a pitch and the floodlights were on. However, Edwardians just about deserved their win, being tight in defence and more forceful in the forwards. They also scored the only tries of the day, both from set pieces, to emphasise their edge in those phases of play. Burntwood defended the clubhouse end playing into the wind in the first half. Will Peach had a penalty attempt in the first minute but his kick was unsurprisingly carried wide by the cross wind. However, the clearance kick was charged down to put the visitors in trouble under their posts. They managed to hold the maul up, win a scrum and clear their lines deep into home territory. Edwardians had a kick at goal from 30 metres after four minutes but the attempt slipped left of the target. A kick and re-gather almost brought the first try for the visitors but the pass inside was spilled to let Burntwood off the hook. At this point, the heavens opened to send players and spectators alike scurrying for the shelter of the clubhouse. When play restarted Edwarians opened the scoring with a penalty goal and quickly followed it up with their first try. A penalty award was kicked deep into the bottom corner and from the line out the visitors’ forwards caught and drove over the line. Another Peach penalty kick was short of the target but he was punting the ball well to keep the Birmingham side in their own half. A penalty plus ten metres for dissent allowed him to find touch ten metres out. Josh Canning won the line out but the drive for the line was held up. Burntwood continued to control possession with close passing amongst the forwards and close to half time they won another penalty which Peach goaled to leave the half time score 3-8. Given the conditions, this seemed a promising position to go on and win from especially when Luke Rookyard received possession at the restart to charge into opposition territory. A high tackle on him earned a penalty which Peach landed for 6-8. Back came Edwardians, employing similar tactics to Burntwood in the first half. They drove the ball at close quarter into the home half, helped by a couple of penalty awards. When close, they opted for the scrum option and at the second time of asking they shunted their way over the line for a pushover try. The conversion went in off the post. Immediately Peach cut the deficit with a penalty goal from the restart. Eds then missed with a penalty kick before Peach kicked his 4th penalty with 12 minutes left. He then put his side in good position with a kick deep into the Eds’ half. Lloyd Shelley drove for the line before the ball reached Ben Holt but he was well-tackled. Then Jack Neal drove strongly from a scrum on the visitors’ 22\. Possession went out to the backs for Brett Taylor to go close. When the ball came back Josh Bayliss tried to find a way through but Eds won a scrum and cleared. The last chance saw Peach try to dart through a gap but the ball ran loose again. Eds worked their way upfield via their forwards and came close to sealing the result from a rolling maul and then a scrum. Both were stopped but the second only at the cost of a penalty. The Eds’ kicker was happy to hoof the ball dead and both sides sought the sanctuary of the dressing rooms. This Saturday (February 1), the start of the RBS 6 Nations tournament, is a non-league weekend. Burntwood are looking to arrange a friendly fixture at The Sportsway prior to viewing France v England on the big screen. Visitors are welcome to enjoy both games in a rugby environment. A week later Burntwood resume league action with a tough trip to Handsworth, the team immediately above them.
