Burntwood Town FC boss Mike Gentles has admitted his side “needed” the point they picked up at Leamington Hibernian.

After a dismal run of seven defeats on the bounce, Town finally had something to cheer about as they bagged a 2-2 draw on the road.

But for a late leveller they could have even been returning with all three.

However, Gentles admits that he is happy to have put a stop to the rot.

“It was harsh blow for us to concede late after the holding out for so long,” he said. “But it’s a point we truly deserved and needed.

“I was proud of the performance of my players.”

A much-changed Town side started brightly and they took the lead when Joshua Haston netted in a lively first half which could have seen more goals from either side.

Leamington did eventually find a way through the Burntwood backline when they levelled in the second period.

However, Town’s newly-acquired fighting spirit showed as they repelled Hibernian and prevented them from getting in front. Their efforts were rewarded when a counter attack on 80 minutes saw Haston beat the offside trap before rounding the keeper to restore his side’s advantage.

It looked as though a much-needed three points would be coming back to Burntwood with Gentles and his men, before a scramble in stoppage time saw the ball poked over the line, forcing Town to settle for a point.

Burntwood will be back in action next Saturday when they entertain Bolehall Swifts in the Fazeley Charity Cup, kick off 2pm.
